Theoxenia has grown out of many of the musical sources that the D. Charles Speer LP Arghiledes drew from. Similarly, this release also comprises solo home studio stylings. These pieces are built on repetitions: of behavior, brief phrases, reiterated modal forms, periodic routines of the household. In even static positions, dynamic cycles emerge. The heart surges forward in a moment of enthusiasm, with a slight rhythmic variant in the music being the gateway. Buried within the tracks, one can glean a tribute to the recently passed Queen of the Beatniks and scattered fragments stolen from a masterpiece of Lemonopoulos. Recurrent synthetic belchings and basic manual repeats, such are the limited choices available at any given moment to the performer. To roll with the lumbering flow or push against, the path of conjoined adherence is most often taken. Blind overdubs reveal monomaniacal insistence on nothingness.
Stasis: from Greek, literally “place," this term has largely taken on the meaning of lack of movement more than location. But the ancient usage centers upon its conception as civil strife within the citystate, often the dire precursor of war. According to Thucydides, in one account about the threat of stasis, many self-professed democrats in Corcyra (Corfu) were actually plotting to kill their creditors. Assessment of the wisdom/value of that approach I will leave for external debates. In our present formation, stasis takes on a technological form, a place removed from open air, sequestered in a monitored series of circuits. Locked into a neutralized plane of touch screen mapping, the edges might still fray despite being contained within a nearly totalizing system. Adventure remains an encounter with risk - where can we locate this? Is it a place to journey to? A process in action? In this case, it may simply be a frequency, timbre, or figure that conjures another place or time, hazy in its aspect - situated between recollection and prognostication, imagination and perception.
